How the magazine works

The editorial rules behind Suede Social’s magazine — the counter-take requirement, The Internet Has Thoughts, the Fluff Index, and the sourcing policy.

The magazine exists because mainstream gear press has a structural problem: the publications reviewing gear are funded by the companies making it. Suede Social’s answer isn’t claiming perfect objectivity — it’s structural skepticism, applied to our own writing first.

The counter-take rule

Every article published here carries a standing rebuttal from Johnny Suede, written at the same time as the piece. It argues against the article’s thesis — steelmanned, not strawmanned. Readers toggle between the sides and vote. The rule is enforced at authoring time; an article without a counter-take cannot ship.

The Internet Has Thoughts

This column takes a mainstream press review, puts it next to what owners report on forums and marketplaces, and issues one of three verdicts: fluffed (the press oversold it), split, or press-was-right. Every verdict links its sources — the original review and the community threads — so you can check the work.

The Fluff Index

The Fluff Index is the running scoreboard those verdicts feed. It exists to make one question answerable over time: how often does the guitar press’s enthusiasm survive contact with the people who actually bought the thing?

Sourcing policy

  • Press claims are cited to the publication, with a link and the publish date.
  • Community quotes are attributed to the platform, link included, with initials only — we quote positions, not people’s full identities.
  • No affiliate links anywhere in editorial. If we say buy it, there is no kickback behind the sentence.
  • AI-assisted writing is labeled. Johnny Suede is a pen name and a clearly disclosed editorial persona, not a fake staff writer.
